Purpose

How it Works

Artists in different locations gather to talk about their experiences creating art. The goal of the artist inquiry is to identify principles and practices of art common across mediums and across cultures. See the list of Current Inquiry Groups.

The artists work in diverse mediums (theater, literary arts, visual arts, pottery, weaving, dance, music, wood carving, storytelling, and so on). In all locations, the inquiry follows the same procedures:

  • Artists decide to participate in The Flow Project artist inquiry and they select a facilitator.
  • The facilitator contacts Doug Banner, Flow Project Inquiry Director, to set-up the inquiry, tailor it for your location and circumstances, and receive orientation and copies of the Facilitation Manual and forms.
  • Each artist group meets once-a-month, where feasible. (Blog-based inquiries may establish a different rhythm.
  • Each group starts with the same question: Given the Flow Project mission, what is important for humanity to know about the artistic experience? From there, each group takes-off in developing a separate line of inquiry.
  • Every inquiry session is recorded and the recordings are sent electronically to the Flow Process Center in Bellingham, Washington, USA. (If the conversation is not in English, an English translation of the verbatim transcript is required.)
